Florida basketball’s Rueben Chinyelu gained national attention as the Gators’ big man was named an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Chinyelu was recognized for his performances in Florida’s road wins against Oklahoma and No. 8 Vanderbilt. He recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Gators’ win at Vandy. That came after he posted 19 points and 12 rebounds in the win against the Sooners.

Chinyelu, who also earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors for the same time period, maintained his momentum after putting up 15 points and 21 rebounds against LSU.

The USBWA honored Chinyelu as one of its five national players of the week. The USBWA also recognized Wisconsin’s John Blackwell, Maryland’s Diggy Coit, Kennesaw State’s RJ Johnson and Stony Brook’s Erik Platt.

The No. 16 Gators return to action on their home court for a sold-out showdown against Auburn on Saturday at 4 p.m.
