Florida football among most hopeless teams in 2025. Where do they rank against others?

by

Florida football is once again facing a potential losing season after starting the 2025 campaign with just two wins in six tries, including the program’s first-ever loss to the USF Bulls — in the Swamp, no less. Predictably, Billy Napier is back on the head coach hot seat as the fans feverishly call for his dismissal.

Expectations coming into the season were a mix between high hopes and pessimistic projections. That is, the Gators’ struggles are not all that surprising, but their performance still has left a lot to be desired.

While the Orange and Blue faithful may feel like it is the end of the world for the gridiron gang, there are plenty of other schools sharing in their misery. The Athletic’s David Ubben recently took a look at the 10 most hopeless college football teams around the nation at the season’s midpoint, with Florida coming in on the tail end at No. 10.

“Billy Napier saved his job with a late-season rally last year, but it looks unlikely to happen again. Until then, Florida fans are left dreaming up fan fiction for the upcoming coaching search and devising ways to keep quarterback DJ Lagway in Gainesville after it’s finished,” Ubben begins.

“It’s been a miserable couple of years and a quick death for the offseason hype that centered mostly on Lagway’s growth under Napier. Losing to South Florida at home is one thing. Following it up with a five-interception loss to LSU and scoring only seven points against Miami makes it much worse,” he continues.

“Nobody on this list has more hope than the Gators (2-4, 1-2 SEC). For now, though, they’re watching an offense stuck in mud. The Gators rank 101st in yards per play but first on this list in losses to in-state rivals this season. At least UCF isn’t on the schedule.”

The good news for Gator fans — well, the schadenfreude news, at least — is that the Florida State Seminoles came in at No. 3 on this list. Add a few more dashes of joy with the inclusion of fellow Southeastern Conference teams, the Kentucky Wildcats and Auburn Tigers, as well.
