Florida State basketball pushes UVA to double OT before falling 91-87

by

Florida State women’s basketball (5-11, 0-4) forced two overtimes against Virginia (12-3, 4-0 ACC), but it wasn’t enough for the victory. The Seminoles fell to the Cavaliers, 91-87, on Sunday at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.

The Seminoles have now lost seven of the last eight games and remain winless in the ACC. Despite the loss, it was one of FSU’s best performances this season.

FSU shot 40.7 percent from the floor with a season-high 81 field goal attempts. The Noles also gathered 50 rebounds, eight blocks and eight steals.

Three Seminoles finished in double figures. Junior guard Sole Williams led the way with a career-high 28 points and five rebounds. She made 11 of her 17 shots and four 3-pointers.

Senior guard Amaya Bonner was one point shy of beating her career-best as she dropped 15 points. She also added six rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks.

Graduate guard Jasmine Shavers was the second-leading scorer with 18 points. She knocked down three 3s and collected seven boards with two assists and two steals.

Sophomore guard Tatum Greene was the rebound leader for the Noles as she grabbed 10, which tied her career-high. Nearly having a double-double, she finished with eight points and had one block.

At first, UVA had a dominant 31-15 lead in the first quarter. However, FSU refused to go down without a fight. The Seminoles cut the lead to 45-32 following a 9-0 run. Then outscored the Cavaliers 22-14 in the third quarter and trailed 59-54 heading into the fourth quarter.

Williams tied the game at 67 after making two layups in the final 16 seconds, forcing overtime. It was FSU’s first overtime appearance since 2024.

Both Williams and Shavers carried the load, scoring-wise, throughout the OTs. UVA still had the edge in the end by knocking down clutch free throws.
