A former college football standout turned college football coach has died weeks before the 2025 opener.
Tragedy has struck the Shenandoah University football program. A former program standout turned coach has died ahead of the 2025 season opener. Keyshawn Wilder, a former star defensive back for SU who was serving as an assistant coach for the team in 2024, has died.

The program announced the devastating news on social media over the weekend. Wilder was a Baltimore, Maryland native. Further details surrounding his passing were unclear at this time.

SU released a statement on social media.
“It is with deep sadness that Shenandoah Athletics announces the passing of beloved former student-athlete and assistant football coach, Keyshawn Wilder. Wilder’s dedication to the Shenandoah football team was profound both on and off the field. His hard work and compassion for the game translated directly to those around him, and his incredible leadership helped pave the way for new leaders to follow in his footsteps.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, teammates and the entire Shenandoah Football family during this difficult time. We stand with them in solidarity and prayer, and we pray for the strength to bear this very painful loss. May his soul rest in peace.”
Wilder was related to a former NFL star
The former college football star turned college football coach was related to Ray Lewis. Wilder’s mother is Ray Lewis’ sister. He is also the nephew of former college football running back Keon Lattimore.

SU head coach Scott Yoder had extremely high praise for him.
“He might be the best defensive back I’ve ever been around in 23 years of coaching,” Yoder said. “No matter how much we might disagree in certain situations, at the end of the day he and I both want to win a heck of a lot, and we both love the game of football, and I think we respect each other because of that.”
Shenandoah is scheduled to open the 2025 season on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Methodist University.
