Former Illinois football head coach Mike White dies

No. 23 Tennessee (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will play Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl on Dec. 30.

Kickoff between the Vols and Fighting Illini is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. EST at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. ESPN will televise the contest.

Former Illinois head coach Mike White died Sunday. He was 89.

White coach Illinois from 1980-87, guiding the Fighting Illini to a 1983 Big Ten championship. He began his coaching career at California, his alma mater, as a defensive line coach from 1958-63. White also served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Stanford (1964-71) before returning to California as head coach (1972-77), guiding the Golden Bears to a 1975 Pac-8 championship.

Following his tenure as California’s head coach, he was an offensive line coach with San Francisco in the NFL (1978-79).

At Illinois, White was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, Walter Camp Coach of the Year and Sporting News Coach of the Year in 1983.

He returned to the NFL in 1990 and was the quarterbacks and offensive line coach for the Los Angeles Raiders, serving in the capacity until 1994. Upon the franchise’s return to Oakland in 1994, he was named head coach. White was the Raiders’ head coach from 1995-96. After his tenure with the Raiders, he was an offensive assistant for the Rams (1997-99) and was a Super Bowl champion during the 1999 season.
