As her rookie season with Washington came to an end following the Mystics’ inability to qualify for the WNBA Playoffs, former Iowa women’s basketball star Lucy Olsen has safely arrived with her newest team: the Townsville Fire of Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).
Olsen revealed that she would be signing with the Fire in late July, as the former Hawkeye looks to continue broadening her skill set during the WNBA’s lengthy offseason, while also generating some income.

Olsen was selected by the Mystics in the second round (No. 23 overall) of the 2025 WNBA draft after spending one year at Iowa and three years with Villanova, where she lit up the stat sheets at both programs.
Olsen updated her loyal fans with her travels to Australia, chronicling the trip across her social media pages.
Olsen is still under contract with the Mystics for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, so the offseason tenure in Australia has no bearing on her status in the WNBA.
Olsen and the Townsville Fire captured the inaugural WNBL Townsville Tip Off ’25 preseason event.
Townsville officially opens its 2025-26 season on Oct. 19 against the Bendigo Spirit. Ironically, the Fire’s second game, scheduled for Oct. 25, will be in Canberra’s AIS Arena against fellow Mystics teammate Jade Melbourne and the UC Capitals.
