Former Notre Dame players Diggins, Citron and Young on WNBA All-Star rosters

Three former Notre Dame women’s basketball players will be on WNBA All-Star rosters when the game is played Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

South Bend’s own Skylar Diggins, who plays for the Seattle Storm, is a member of captain Nepheesa Collier’s team while WNBA rookie Sonia Citron of the Washington Mystics and Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces are members of captain Caitlin Clark’s squad.

All three former Irish guards were selected as reserves. The league’s head coaches selected 12 reserves, voting on three guards, five frontcourt players and four players regardless of position.

Diggins will be making her seventh WNBA All-Star appearance and, along with fellow Seattle Storm teammate Nneka Ogwumike, is one of the oldest all-stars across both rosters. Ogumike turned 35 on July 2 and Diggins will turn 35 on August 2.

Diggins, a South Bend Washington High School grad, graduated from Notre Dame in 2013. She was drafted with the third overall pick in that year’s WNBA Draft. This year with the Storm, Diggins is averaging a team-leading 18.2 points and 5.9 assists per game. She has started all 21 of the team’s games as of Sunday.

Citron is the youngest WNBA All-Star at age 21. She was drafted with the No. 3 pick by the Washington Mystics this past spring, following her senior season with Notre Dame. She has started all 20 games for the Mystics, averaging 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal a game.

Young, the 2016 Indiana Miss Basketball out of Princeton High School, is making her fourth consecutive all-star appearance. Young was selected by the Aces as the top pick in the 2019 draft after leaving Notre Dame following her junior year of competition. This season, Young has started all 21 games for the Aces, averagiing 17.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and a steal per game.

The WNBA Skills competition and 3-point contest will be held Friday beginning at 8 p.m. and televised by ESPN. The All-Star game is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised by ABC.
