Former SEC Offensive Player of the Year in first season with ETSU football

No. 17 Tennessee (1-0) will play its first home game Saturday during the 2025 football season. The Vols will host East Tennessee State (1-0) at Neyland Stadium. Rankings reflect the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Kickoff between the Vols and Buccaneers is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Kerryon Johnson is in his first season as running backs coach at ETSU. After playing in the NFL from 2018-21, he launched his coaching career at North Alabama. Johnson served as director of player development (2023) and running backs coach (2024) at North Alabama.

First-year East Tennessee State head coach Will Healy hired him as the Buccaneers’ running backs coach on April 17.

Johnson played running back at Auburn from 2015-17 and was named 2017 SEC Offensive Player of the Year. In 37 games, including 19 starts, he totaled 2,494 rushing yards, 32 rushing touchdowns, 478 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns, two passing touchdowns and 653 kick return yards.

Johnson recorded 1,391 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns, 194 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns and one passing touchdown in 2017.

He was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft (No. 43 overall).
