During a recent media availability, former Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams openly discussed recruiting players to play hoops at Maryland while he was still under contract with the Aggies.
Williams, who left Bryan-College Station, Texas, for the Terrapins back in April, ignited the college basketball landscape with his statements on the timeline of transfer guard Myles Rice. He was scheduled for a visit to College Station in April, but those plans changed when Williams was named Maryland’s head coach.

Although no NCAA recruiting violations were committed, here are Williams’ thoughts on Rice as a player and how he ended up as a Terrapin, instead of playing for the Aggies:
While Williams did secure three appearances in the NCAA Tournament during his tenure as Texas A&M’s head coach, his admission to Rice’s transfer situation was just the tip of the iceberg in his dramatic departure from College Station. Many other former Aggies left with Williams when he was announced as the new head coach at Maryland, including point guard Andre Mills and forwards Pharrel Payne and Solomon Washington.
Needless to say, Bucky McMillan had to start from scratch when Texas A&M hired him as the 23rd head coach in the program’s history. He has done so well, however. In just a short time at the helm, McMillan brought in highly touted guard Pop Isaacs and forward Mackenzie Mgbako to help implement the new style of electric, high-tempo basketball he wants to instill.

The situation with Williams sparked a debate across social media, highlighting some questionable ethics involved in his departure from the Aggies. Nonetheless, hoops season for the Maroon and White begins on Monday, Nov. 3, against Northwestern State.
