Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is headed to the injured list with a right thumb injury, according to a report Tuesday by MLB Network insider Joel Sherman. The club has not confirmed the news.
“At that point, I was like, ‘Let’s not mess around with it,'” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “And, you know, I basically took it away from him. I didn’t want to let him even play catch.”
While the Mets headed to Washington, D.C., to open a series with the Nationals on Tuesday, Alvarez returned to New York to undergo an MRI on Monday.
Alvarez missed nearly two months in 2024 after suffering a left thumb sprain, and a fractured left hamate bone in Spring Training this year cost him a month of the regular season.
Alvarez, 23, had been excelling at the plate since returning to the Mets from a month-long stint at Triple-A. In 21 games since July 21, the right-handed hitter had slashed .323/.408/.645 with four homers, six doubles and 13 RBIs.
