The Mets are planning to designate right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas for assignment, a source told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Montas was going into the final year of a two-year, $34 million deal he signed last December. The club has not confirmed the move.

The transaction would clear a 40-man roster spot ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to finalize rosters before this year’s Rule 5 Draft.

Montas was expected to miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing elbow surgery. He made only seven starts as a Met, recording a 6.28 ERA.

The 32-year-old was part of the Mets’ remaking of their rotation last offseason, alongside the additions of Griffin Canning and reliever-turned-starter Clay Holmes. Montas began the season on the injured list and did not make his Mets debut until June 24. His season ended in August after he felt some lower biceps soreness and was diagnosed with a UCL injury.

The Mets are expected to be in the mix for some of the top free-agent starters on the market this winter.
