Bianca Andreescu is giving some key advice to Victoria Mboko as the 2019 US Open champion says it will be important for the 18-year-old to "focus on the process" rather than the results following Montreal triumph, and also noted that being surrounded by the right group of people is a very important thing.
Mboko, who was ranked at No. 85 when Montreal started and received a main draw wildcard, pulled off a sensational run to land her maiden WTA 1000 title. In front of her home fans, the rising Canadian star beat four Grand Slam champions – Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka.
Now, at 18, Mboko is a WTA 1000 champion and she is sitting at No. 24 in the world.
Six years ago, an 18-year-old Andreescu won her first WTA 1000 title in Indian Wells. That same year, She won another WTA 1000 crown in Toronto – became a Grand Slam champion at the US Open – and also achieved a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world.
However, as you probably know, Andreescu hasn't had it easy since her breakout 2019 season as she hasn't won any titles since and has often struggled with injuries, but also inconsistent results and major pressure – which negatively impacted her mental health.
Andreescu's advice to Mboko
"I can only speak from experience. For me, I think what’s super important is to enjoy the moment fully. You know, celebrate with your family, your friends, for as long as you can. But with tennis, you know, there’s a tournament every week, so that can always be difficult, but, you know, really savor it. But then, you know, it’s back to the drawing board," the 2019 US Open winner told CBC News.
"I’m sure she wants to achieve much more than just this tournament, which is obviously a great achievement, but you want to keep that momentum going. So focusing on the process rather than the results I think is super important because once you get a taste of it, you just keep wanting that.”
Following her outstanding 2019 season, Andreescu was widely tipped to win multiple Grand Slams and do many more great things. And it was too much to handle for the Canadian.
It remains to be seen how Mboko will handle her newfound fame.
