GameDay: Hey let’s win at South Carolina!

by

Winning is hard. Winning on the road is harder. Winning on the road in conference play is the hardest.

Mizzou has been in the SEC now 14 seasons and they have 26 road wins in league play. That’s an average of less than 2 per season. And each year they play 9 road games, so that’s an average of 2-7. Here’s a breakdown of road wins per season:

  • 2013: 2 (South Carolina, Mississippi State)

  • 2014: 2 (Arkansas, Auburn)

  • 2018: 4 (South Carolina, Alabama, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt)

  • 2019: 2 (Texas A&M, Georgia)

  • 2021: 5 (Arkansas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida)

  • 2022: 2 (Ole Miss, Texas A&M)

  • 2023: 4 (Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU)

  • 2025: 3 (Florida, Mississippi State, Georgia)

Those Kim Anderson years were fun, huh?

Surprisingly enough, yes Cuonzo Martin was pretty good on the road! Under Zo, Mizzou played 88 regular season conference games and they were 35.53, for a 0.397 winning percentage. But the Tigers were 14-30 on the road, meaning their win rate on the road was just a little worse, 0.318 percent.

Dennis Gates has been good as well, mostly, if you disregard the bad year. Four wins his first year, three last year in the best league of all time. Winning at Kentucky was a nice feat this year but losing like they did have some disappointing losses to both Ole Miss and LSU. The odds for the Tigers to pick up another win on the road are as high as they’ll be today against the Gamecocks. KenPom.com predicts Mizzou will lose by a point, but that means the odds are essentially 50/50.

But seeing the 12 point win prediction on our preview left me a little surprised because, while it’s within the realm of possibility to win this game by 12 points, it’s certainly unlikely. In those 26 road wins in Mizzou SEC history, a little less than half of them were by 10 points or more. But three of those 26 were at Colonial Life Arena. The last one coming in 2021 when 5 Tigers finished in double figures led by Dru Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon.

I remember that game. Tilmon didn’t start and had missed the previous two games due to a death in the family. Mizzou lost those two games to Arkansas and Georgia. And that South Carolina team was a mess. They only played in 21 games and went 6-15.

That’s basically what Missouri has been when they’ve won at South Carolina. A tournament team when the Gamecocks were headed nowhere. So… why not?
