Georgia basketball continues historic rise in Coaches Poll

by

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball team is coming off an impressive home win over the Auburn Tigers to begin SEC play. Georgia is 13-1 after defeating Auburn 104-100 in overtime. Georgia is undefeated at home, but has a big road challenge on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET (televised on SEC Network) against the defending national champion Florida Gators.

UGA is ranked as the No. 20 team in the country in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll for Jan. 5. The Bulldogs have not been ranked this high since 2003.

“1-0 no matter how you draw it up against a really good Auburn team,” Georgia coach Mike White said after the win over Auburn. “I thought both teams play really well. Great environment. Thankful to our fans. A game that that I know I’ll remember forever just the way it ended. Incredible tale of two separate responses.”

Georgia’s win over Auburn had an unacceptable lapse. The Bulldogs were up by four points with five seconds left when Georgia fouled Auburn, who made two free throws and then missed the third, got a rebound and made a shot to send the game to overtime.

“We get up four late and didn’t make the great decisions that we needed to make just to finish it,” White added. Georgia got a season-high 31 points from Jeremiah Wilkinson in the win. The Bulldogs have a long way to go in SEC play, but a 1-0 start isn’t bad.
