Georgia coordinator among Michigan’s top head coach candidates

by

The Georgia Bulldogs appeared to be through the 2025 coaching cycle without losing a coordinator. However, that could change after the Michigan Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore in stunning timing. Moore is out after two seasons with the Wolverines. His departure leaves a major vacancy for Michigan, which is one of the top jobs in all of college football.

The Wolverines’ coaching search has begun and Michigan could look to persuade a top college football coach to take their head coaching role. Fox Sports named Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann as a top candidate for Michigan along with Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, former LSU coach Brian Kelly, Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

Minter, who was previously Michigan’s defensive coordinator on their national championship team, would make a lot of sense for the Wolverines. However, the Chargers are very likely to make the NFL playoffs, so that could delay Minter’s potential hiring past the opening of the transfer portal, which Michigan does not want (unless he worked double duty).

Schumann makes sense for Michigan. He has a wealth of experience under Georgia coach Kirby Smart and is an excellent recruiter.

“If the Wolverines are looking to hire one of the best assistant coaches in America for the last decade and pick up the next head-coaching jewel to come up under both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart, they’ll fly south of the Mason-Dixon Line to make Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann say no to being the next head coach in Ann Arbor,” RJ Young of Fox Sports said.

Schumann has an elite track record and is willing to be patient like when Georgia coach Kirby Smart left for Alabama and former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning left for Oregon. He could also be a head coach candidate elsewhere if Michigan elects to add the head coach of a major college football program, which could cause ripple effects across the country like it did when Alabama coach Nick Saban retired.
