Georgia defensive coordinator projected to become SEC head coach

by

A Georgia Bulldogs coach is getting serious buzz to be the Florida Gators new head coach. CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli tried to predict which coaches would fill the vacancies in the Power Four, and he predicted that Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann would end up at Florida.

This is far from the first time Schumann was rumored to leave Georgia. North Carolina was interested in Schumann in 2024 before they went with Bill Belichick, while the Philadelphia Eagles had an interview with Schumann to be their defensive coordinator.

Schumann has never been a head coach in the Power Four level, but Fornelli discussed several logical reasons for Florida going after Schumann. “The last time someone hired Georgia’s defensive coordinator away, it went pretty well. Dan Lanning is doing pretty well in Oregon with the Ducks,” said Fornelli.

Schumann has spent his entire coaching career with Kirby Smart, transitioning from an student assistant and graduate assistant at Alabama from 2008-14 to an inside linebackers coach at Georgia from 2016-18. He worked his way up to becoming co-defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs in 2019, and eventually, he took the defensive coordinator job as his own in 2024.

“He has the blueprint to run a successful program…he’s a dogged recruiter,” said Fornelli. Georgia’s defense has constantly been one of the best defenses in the nation, and while 2025’s iteration has been less strong, the run defense has been impressive.
