Girls basketball: Lady Cougars suffer first loss of season

Visiting South Ripley held the lead at every quarter break Tuesday at South Decatur en route to knocking off the Lady Cougars 60-34.

The Lady Raiders improve to 3-1 on the season. South is 5-1 on the season.

The Lady Cougars got five points from both Riley Benge and Raegan Benge in the first quarter. The Lady Raiders were led by Kaiya Rinear with seven points and Claire Samples with five. Both Rinear and Samples hit a 3-pointer in the quarter as the visiting squad held a 16-10 lead.

South Ripley’s Aubrey Werner scored five points, including a 3-pointer, in the second quarter to lead the Lady Raiders to a 27-17 lead at the half. Lilly Murray connected on two bombs for South for the Lady Cougars’ six points.

A 20-point third quarter, led by Rinear’s nine points, by the Lady Raiders extended the lead to 47-28 after three quarters. South was led by Taylor Somers with seven points, including a 3-pointer.

South Ripley outscored the Lady Cougars 13-7 in the final eight minutes to pull away to the 60-34 win. Murray and Somers both had three points for South.

South Ripley’s Rinear led all scorers with 21 points. Samples added 14 for the Lady Raiders.

For the Lady Cougars, Somers led in scoring with 10 points and finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds. Murray finished with nine points and two assists followed by Riley Benge eight points, Raegan Benge five points and five rebounds and Dalilah Martin two points and a team-high three assists.

South Decatur travels to North Decatur Saturday.

South 54, Columbus Christian 27

South Decatur opened the week with a 54-27 victory against visiting Columbus Christian Monday. The win was the fifth on the season for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Cougars led 15-6 after the first eight minutes of action. Raegan Benge poured in seven points in the quarter for the Lady Cougars. Dalilah Martin had a pair of buckets for four points. Riley Benge and Lilly Murray both had a bucket to round out the first quarter.

Raegan Benge entered double figures with five more points in the second quarter. Buckets by Taylor Somers, Riley Benge, Sophia Wittkamper and Murray to go with a Martin free throw gave South a commanding 29-10 lead at the half.

The Lady Cougars outscored Columbus Christian 13-9 in the third quarter to hold a 42-19 advantage heading to the fourth quarter. Martin and Raegan Benge both had four points in the quarter. Riley Benge added three points and Somers had a bucket for two.

In the fourth quarter, Skylar AmRhein drained a 3-pointer on her way to seven points. Lyndsey Shireman and Brynklie Ortman both had two points and Jocelynne Collins hit a free throw as South pulled away for the 54-27 victory.

For South, Raegan Benge tallied 16 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. Martin finished with nine points, two rebounds and two steals. Riley Benge added seven points, four rebounds and three steals. AmRhein had seven points and two rebounds. Murray had four points, three rebounds and two steals. Somers finished with four points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ortman (2 rebounds, two steals), Shireman (2 rebounds) and Wittkamper (2 rebounds) all scored two points. Collins scored one point to go with three rebounds and one steal.

Switzerland County 50, North 46

Host Switzerland County rallied from a 33-31 third-quarter deficit to knock off North Decatur 50-46.

North drops to 0-4 on the season. Switzerland County improves to 2-2.

The Lady Chargers held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. Carmen Thackery led a balanced North attack with four points. Brooklyn White hit a 3-pointer and Jo Whitaker added three points. Jewel Verseman and Leonie Clemente both added a bucket. Brynlee Green hit a free throw.

In the second quarter, Switzerland County outscored North 13-7 to lead 26-24 at the half. Verseman scored four points for the Lady Chargers in the quarter. Libby Crawford had a bucket and Thackery hit a free throw.

Led by White’s five points, North outscored the Lady Pacers 11-5 in the third quarter to grab a 2-point lead. Thackery, Verseman and Whitaker all had a bucket for North.

In the final quarter, the Lady Pacers outscored North 19-13 to rally for the win. Whitaker scored nine points for North.

For the Lady Chargers, Whitaker led the way with 14 points. White was also in double figures with 10 points. Verseman scored eight points followed by Thackery seven, Green three, Clemente two and Crawford two.

In the junior varsity game, Switzerland County posted the 42-18 win. Allee Gray led North with five points, including a 3-pointer. LaShay Dwiggins scored three points, followed by Norah Amberger, Grace Nobbe, Jessie Biltz, and Navaeh Schwartz all with two points. Macie Leake and Kieran Lusk each hit a free throw.
