Girls basketball: Lady Cougars take fourth at holiday classic

South Decatur traveled to Hauser for the 2-day, 8-team DiTech Holiday Classic.

In the first round, the Lady Cougars knocked off Greenwood Christian Academy 46-37.

South led 14-11 after the first quarter and held the same 3-point lead at the half at 25-22. Greenwood Christian cut a point off the deficit in the third quarter and trailed 35-33 heading to the fourth quarter.

South outscored GCA 11-4 in the final quarter to secure the victory.

South’s Lilly Murray scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the second half. Dalilah Martin also scored in double figures with 10 points. Lyndsey Shireman and Raegan Benge both chipped in with eight points. Riley Benge scored five points, and Taylor Somers had two points.

Riley Benge added a team-high six rebounds and team-high six assists. Shireman added five rebounds.

In the semifinal, the Lady Cougars fell 48-30 to Henryville.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter. A Raegan Benge bucket and free throw from Martin was all for South in the quarter.

South turned the tables on Henryville in the second quarter, allowing just two buckets to the Lady Hornets while pouring in 13 points to cut the deficit to 21-16 at the half. Murray had six points in the quarter for South.

Henryville took control again in the third, outscoring South 17-7 to lead 38-23 heading to the fourth quarter.

Riley Benge had five of South’s seven points in the final eight minutes as the Lady Cougars fell to the Lady Hornets 48-30.

For South, Riley Benge tallied 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Murray finished with eight points, two assists and seven rebounds. Martin added five points. Raegan Benge had three points and seven rebounds. Somers finished with three points and four rebounds.

In the battle for third place, South was defeated by Crawford County 48-26 to finish fourth in the tournament.

South trailed by three after the first quarter 9-6. Martin scored four points for South and Raegan Benge had the other bucket.

In the second quarter, Crawford County outscored South 16-7 to hold a 25-13 edge at the half. Somers hit three free throws. Murray and Raegan Benge both added a bucket.

The game got away from South in the third quarter with Crawford County extending the lead to 41-17 heading to the fourth quarter.

For South, Martin and Raegan Benge both scored six points. Riley Benge added five points. Murray scored four points. Somers scored three points and Sophia Wittkamper had two points. Riley Benge and Raegan Benge both had seven rebounds.

Tri 39 North 22

Playing a little short-handed, the Lady Chargers faced a solid Tri Lady Titans squad. Tri was too strong on this day as the Lady Titans posted the 39-22 victory against North Decatur.

With the win, the Lady Titans improve to 9-2 on the season. The Lady Chargers fall to 4-10.

For the Lady Chargers, Carmen Thackery tallied nine points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Libby Crawford finished with seven points and two rebounds. Jo Whitaker added six points and three rebounds. Norah Amberger grabbed four rebounds. Jewel Verseman pulled down five rebounds.

Franklin Central 54 Rushville 33

In the opening round of the Northridge tournament, the Lady Lions faced Franklin Central. The Lady Flashes broke open a tight game at the half with a big third quarter en route to a 54-33 victory against Rushville.

Franklin Central held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 23-19 at the break at the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Flashes outscored Rushville 20-7 to take control of the game.

For the Lady Lions, Carly Senour led in scoring with eight points. Charlotte Caviness and Lia Bohn both scored seven points. Kelsey Morgan added six points. Makenna Ripberger had four points and Melaney Mahan hit a free throw for one point.
