Girls basketball: Lady Pirates open season with win at JCD

The girls’ basketball season is off and running as each of the local teams have hit the hardwood in regular season action.

Greensburg

The Lady Pirates opened the season with a convincing 86-47 victory on the road at Jac-Cen-Del. Greensburg jumped out to a 32-9 lead after one quarter and sailed to the victory.

Greensburg outscored JCD 32-10 in transition points, 50-15 on points off turnovers and 18-4 on second chance points. The Lady Pirates scored 62 points in the paint and had 24 assists in the contest.

Claire Larrison led the way for the Lady Pirates with 38 points, eight rebounds, six assists, seven steals and three blocks. Aly Powers added 14 points, one assist and two steals. Lulu Webb tallied 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Mary Harmon and Kahlen Adams both scored six points. Harmon also dished out a team-high eight assists while Adams finished with six assists. Aubrie Barnes-Pettit scored five points followed by Kiera Kennelly four and Emma Kuntz two (3 rebounds, two steals). Jaylin Thornton added two rebounds and two steals and Rachel Lipps had a steal.

South Decatur

The Lady Cougars improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 47-15 victory at Southwestern (Shelby).

South Decatur jumped out to a 20-3 lead after the first quarter and led 30-4 at the half. The lead was 40-10 after three quarters.

Raegan Benge and Dalilah Martin both scored 14 points for the Lady Cougars. Riley Benge scored five points followed by Lyndsey Shireman four, Lilly Murray three, Taylor Somers three, Jocelynne Collins two and Sophia Wittkamper two.

Raegan Benge had a team-high seven rebounds. Somers and Riley Benge both finished with six rebounds. Brynklie Ortman and Shireman both had three rebounds. Somers finished with a team-leading five assists. Martin dished out three assists. Somers also had three blocks to lead South.

North Decatur

The Lady Chargers opened up the new season with a hard-fought loss against Lawrenceburg 29-22 Saturday.

The Lady Chargers played well defensively for the entire night, despite the shooting woes from the field, holding the Lady Tigers to 32 percent shooting.

North led 6-5 after one quarter, trailed 10-8 at the half and trailed 18-16 heading to the fourth quarter. Lawrenceburg outscored North 11-6 in the final quarter to hold on for the win.

For North, Jewel Verseman led the way with eight points. Carmen Thackery chipped in with five points. Jo Whitaker tallied four points and seven rebounds. Brynlee Green scored three points, and Brooklyn White added two points.

The Lady Chargers host Greensburg Friday and travel to Batesville Saturday.

In the junior varsity game, the Lady Chargers fell 25-20.

Batesville

The Lady Bulldogs opened the season hosting New Palestine. The Lady Dragons knocked off Batesville 68-33 behind 11 made 3-pointers. New Palestine jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 43-17 at the half.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Maggie Jelinek led Batesville with eight points and 11 rebounds. Molly Gesell tallied seven points and five rebounds. Nora Wiedeman added six points and three rebounds. Kaylin Kathmann finished with five points, three assists and two steals. Jo Dirkhising had four points and three rebounds. Leah Meyer added three points and one rebound.

The Lady Bulldogs host the South Dearborn Lady Knights Thursday.

Rushville

The Lady Lions began their season hosting New Castle Friday. The Lady Trojans posted the 51-38 victory against Rushville.

For the Lady Lions, Carly Senour led in scoring with 10 points. Makenna Ripberger finished with nine points. Charlotte Caviness scored eight points. Kelsey Morgan added six points, Charli Marcum three points and Lia Bohn two points.

Saturday, the Lady Lions traveled to Eastern Hancock and were defeated 55-26 by the Lady Royals.

Senour had a team-high seven points. Morgan scored five points. Caviness and Mikayla Herbert both had three points. Josie Corn, Marcum, Ripberger and Becca Tabeling all scored two points.

The Lady Lions host EIAC opponent South Dearborn on Saturday. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m.

Saturday will be the Lady Lion 50 Year Reunion with the four state finalist teams being recognized between the JV and varsity games.

The junior varsity Lady Lions fell to Oldenburg Academy 33-24 Friday. For the Lady Lions, Emily Rouse tallied 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Jasmine Taylor scored five points. Elaine Angle added four points, five rebounds, and one steal. Jennifer Ballenger scored two points. Molly Corn and Jerrica Talor both had one point. Ryli Whaley finished with four rebounds and three steals.

Saturday, Rushville lost at Eastern Hancock 25-19. For Rushville, Althea Tellas finished with five points and two rebounds. Whaley had five points, three rebounds, and three steals. Rouse added four points and two rebounds. Taylor had three points and seven rebounds. Angle added one point, two rebounds and four steals. Ballenger had one point and three rebounds.
