Islam Makhachev has become one of the biggest names in all of combat sports, but the pound-for-pound best MMA fighter on the planet still conducts business without a nickname to call his own.
It’s rare in today’s sport of MMA to not have a moniker. Nicknames help fighters stand out among the pack and give fans even more to connect with. Some of the biggest and most dominant champions in MMA history carried nicknames recognizable to all. This includes Jon “Bones” Jones, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko, and Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Even Makhachev’s predecessor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, used the nickname “Eagle” throughout his legendary career.
Makhachev, who is coming off a dominant decision win over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 to claim the undisputed welterweight title, has won his last 16 trips to the Octagon. That ties the UFC record, making Makhachev one of the most successful fighters the organization has ever seen. Still, Makhachev doesn’t have a nickname like most of these other UFC greats.
Luckily, UFC fans are a clever bunch.
