Grant Holmes hits IL with right elbow injury for Braves

by

ARLINGTON — Injuries continue to hit the Braves’ rotation.

The latest setback is right-hander officially landing on the injured list with right elbow inflammation on Sunday, a day after he complained of elbow tightness during his start against the Rangers on Saturday. The Braves recalled right-hander Daysbel Hernández from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Manager Brian Snitker alluded to the likely IL stint for Holmes after Saturday’s game.

“When they feel tightness and all in the elbow, it’s going to be time [on the IL],” Snitker said.

Holmes makes it a full rotation of five starters on the IL for the Braves, along with Chris Sale, Reynaldo López, Spencer Schwellenbach and AJ Smith-Shawver.

Holmes made his team-leading 21st start Saturday, allowing four runs over four innings in what became a 6-5 loss to the Rangers. For the season, Holmes is 4-9 with a 3.99 ERA.

Holmes has been with the Braves since signing late in the 2022 season, pitching for the big league team the past two seasons.

Hernández has had two scoreless outings for Gwinnett since being optioned on July 13. He threw two scoreless innings in an appearance on July 20 and had one scoreless inning in an appearance on Thursday.
