Greg Rusedski critiques Shelton after loss to Jannik Sinner

by

Given the dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, most are wondering what the secret is behind their great game.

Fans, as well as analysts and experts, seem somewhat frustrated considering that no one can defeat these two, who are clearly dominant over everyone else.

However, several names are often mentioned as potential competitors to this duo, and among them is Ben Shelton.

The 23-year-old American caused optimism with his performance at the Australian Open, but still failed to beat Jannik Sinner. Sinner was dominant in the match against the 23-year-old, and during his podcast, Greg Rusedski commented on the dominance of Jannik and Alcaraz, as well as Shelton's performance against the Italian.

Rusedski believes that Grigor Dimitrov is the best example of how to play against Jannik, as he showed an excellent level of play.

“I think Grigor Dimitrov played the perfect match [against Sinner] at Wimbledon,” said Rusedski. “He was up two sets to love and Roger Federer himself said, I know how to play Sinner now after watching that Wimbledon match. Sinner wouldn’t have won Wimbledon without that injury and I think he would probably be talking about Alcaraz winning another Wimbledon title.

You have to have that slice, keep the ball low, quick into the forehand coming forward. And I’d like to see somebody like Ben Shelton, who’s improving, get that backhand better, take the ball earlier. I was a little disappointed in Australia because he tried a tactic that didn’t work because he [Shelton] didn’t come out guns blazing and he let Sinner settle."

Rusedski: It is important to change the approach

According to Rusedski, Jannik and Carlos easily finish the job when they feel safe and comfortable, and the best example of this is the final between Novak and Alcaraz.

When the Serbian tennis player started strongly, Alcaraz did not panic, aware that Djokovic was tired. However, Djokovic was going for the forehand more and the serve.

Rusedski believes that most players will notice this and change their approach with the desire to beat Jannik and Carlos.

Ultimately, Greg notes top players need to look at how Novak played in the first set against Alcaraz and change their approach if they want to beat Alcaraz.

It will be really interesting to see if someone will be able to dethrone these two in the future and if a tennis player will appear who can cause serious problems from tournament to tournament.
