Guadalajara: Iva Jovic, 17, becomes youngest American since Coco Gauff to win title

Iva Jovic ousted Emiliana Arango 6-4 6-1 to lift her maiden WTA title in Guadalajara and also become the youngest American titlist since Coco Gauff in 2021.

The rising American star, who entered the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara ranked at No. 73 in the world, failed to serve out for the opening set at 5-3 after blowing three set points. However, the 17-year-old didn't panic a bit, breaking Arango in the 10th game – the game in which the 53rd-ranked Colombian was serving to stay in the set.

From that moment on, it was an easy ride for Jovic, who registered three breaks in the second set en route to getting the job done in straight sets.

It is worth mentioning that Arango battled an illness and she even threw up on the court.

Jovic is the youngest WTA champion since Gauff

When Gauff won 2021 Parma, she was 17 years old. By winning Guadalajara, Jovic joined the current two-time Grand Slam champion in landing a maiden WTA main glory before turning 18.

Also, Jovic – who was 17 years and 283 days old on Sunday – is the youngest WTA champion of the year. Previously, the record was held by Mirra Andreeva, who was 17 years and 299 days old when she made it all the way in Dubai in February.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old American kept it classy and showed respect for Arango and her condition.

"You showed so much fight and gave the people a show. It's not easy to start out on tour when you're young … but people like Emiliana make it easier and always have a smile on their face," Jovic told Arango.
