Hawk to play at Taylor

Washington Lady Hatchet senior guard Shay Hawk has signed her letter of intent to continue her basketball career with Taylor University.

Hawk, a key member of Washington’s back-to-back sectional champions in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and of the current Lady Hatchet team that has spent much of the season ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, will play for the Trojans of coach Cassie Wiseman next season. Taylor University was founded in 1846 and is a top-ranked Christian college school located in Upland, Indiana. The Trojans compete at the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) level.

Hawk, who was surrounded by many family and friends as well as her Lady Hatchet family during the ceremony, was excited to officially sign with Taylor.

“I’ve worked really hard, and I’m really excited to play my next career in college for Taylor. I loved everything about Taylor, I loved the family atmosphere there, I loved the campus, I loved everything about it,” said Hawk, who plans to major in Nursing at Taylor. “I’m really thankful and thankful for all the support.”

Lady Hatchet coach Gretchen Miles had high praise for Hawk both as a player and a person.”

“This takes a lot of hard work. What you see here today is surface level, like the fun part. What you don’t see is all the hard work, the sacrifice, the time away from what her friends are doing when she’s playing, or time away from her family. Taylor’s getting a great one,” said Miles. “But also, what I admire a lot about Shay has nothing to do with basketball is the person Shay is. Shay brings a lot of joy to teams, a lot of joy to coaches. She reminds us and our players why we do what we do.”
