Hinsdale Central (Ill.) Claims Swimming World Boys’ National Team Championship (Full Results)

On its way to capturing a third consecutive Illinois state championship during the winter, Hinsdale Central highlighted the run by breaking the national high school record in the 200-yard medley relay. Now, the program can add another accolade, as it has been crowned national champion for the 2024-25 scholastic season by Swimming World.

Hinsdale Central scored 160 points to nail down the top spot in the mythical meet, and finished 23.5 points ahead of Keller High (Texas), which captured last year’s title and was powered by University of Virginia recruit Maximus Williamson. Finishing third was The Bolles School, which tallied 134 points and won the Independent Schools’ national title.

Swimming World, thanks to the calculations and dedicated time of Bob Klapthor, annually recognizes the top high school programs in the country. All times produced by athletes in high school competition are scored by Klapthor using a 16-place system. Swimmers are limited to two individual events and two relays, per high school rules, and Klapthor ensures each school’s entries reflect their maximum scoring.

With its national record of 1:26.75 in the 200 medley relay, Hinsdale Central earned 40 points in the opening event of the mythical meet. The relay featured Luke Vatev, Joshua Bey, Henry Guo and Matthew Vatev. Hinsdale also had the fourth-fastest time in the country in the 200 freestyle relay, behind a swim of 1:21.33, and was seventh in the 400 freestyle relay at 2:59.38.

A senior and Indiana University recruit, Bey added key scoring for the Red Devils in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Bey had the No. 2 time in the country in the 200 medley, going 1:43.96, and he was seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 53.32. Guo was eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.32 and Luke Vatev was eighth nationally in the 100 freestyle at 43.50, and fourth in the 100 backstroke (46.52).
