If there is one question mark surrounding Alabama Crimson Tide starting quarterback Ty Simpson entering the 2025 season, it’s the fact that, despite entering year four in Tuscaloosa, the redshirt junior does not have a lot of previous college football experience as a starter.
A former five-star recruit, Simpson originally came to Alabama as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 2022 recruiting class, rated as the nation’s No. 26 overall prospect, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, out of Westview High School in Tennessee.

That cycle, Simpson was also considered the nation’s No. 3 overall quarterback recruit behind only Cade Klubnik and Conner Weigman, as well as ahead of others such as Drew Allar, Gunner Stockton, and Maalik Murphy.
Since arriving in Tuscaloosa, Simpson has been a backup across each of the past three seasons from 2022-24, a span in which he completed 58% of passes for 381 yards, while also rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns across 22 attempts.
However, just how much of that previous action has come against elite competition, in particular, SEC teams?
Dating back to the 2022 season, Simpson has appeared in a combined 16 games during his Alabama career, with seven coming against SEC opponents. Those teams were Vanderbilt (2022), Ole Miss (2023), Mississippi State (2023), Kentucky (2023), Missouri (2024), LSU (2024), and Oklahoma (2024).

Here is a look at Simpson’s stats from each of those seven games.
Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson vs. past SEC competition
-
vs. Vanderbilt (2022) – 1/1, 5 yards
-
vs. Ole Miss (2023) – N/A (did not record any stats)
-
at Mississippi State (2023) – 0/1, 1 rush, -1 yard
-
at Kentucky (2023) – 1/3, 51 yards, 1 rush, 9 yards
-
vs. Missouri (2024) – 1 rush, 3 yards
-
at LSU (2024) – 1 rush, 1 yard
Altogether, across those seven games of past SEC experience, Simpson has simply not played much against foes from within the conference, with the most likely coming via that road game at Kentucky back in 2023. In all, Simpson is a combined 2-of-6 passing for 56 yards, while also having rushed for 12 yards on four attempts, against SEC foes.
Now the Crimson Tide’s confirmed starting quarterback entering the 2025 season however, that will certainly change for Simpson this fall.
