Sep. 2—BEMIDJI — A record $48,000 was raised for Bemidji State women’s athletics during the annual Howe-Welle Women’s Athletics Golf Tournament, which took place on Aug. 22 at Bemidji Town and Country Club.
A total of 123 golfers played in the annual tournament that raises money to support BSU’s nine women’s athletics programs. Since 2019, the tournament has raised over $240,000.

“This event creates accessible opportunities for female student-athletes to grow and succeed during their time at Bemidji State,” event organizer Jesse Katz said in a release. “The support from this event helps us become a true destination university for women’s athletics in the region, offering experiences and resources that set our programs apart. By investing in these athletes, supporters directly enhance their college journey and open doors to opportunities they may not otherwise have.”
With 29 teams competing in the tournament, there was a three-way tie for first place. The team of Clint Cornell, Greg Cornell, Krisi Fenner and Kurt Fenner eventually landed atop the leaderboard.
The Howe-Welle Tournament began in 2019 as a reboot of the similar Lady Beaver Golf Tournament, which ran from 1983 until 2010.
The Howe-Welle Tournament is named in honor of two of the Lady Beaver Tournament founders: Ruth Howe, a BSU coach in multiple women’s sports and an official founder of Bemidji State women’s athletics, and Jeanette Welle, a longtime Beaver athletics supporter.
