Ilya Kharun Sets Three Pool Records as Arizona State Splits with USC

Fresh off a successful run through the World Cup circuit, Ilya Kharun set three pool records in a 193-107 win over USC on Saturday.

Kharun accounted for three of four pool records at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The USC women’s team bested ASU, 169-131.

Arizona State set the tone for the meet by having its B and C relays tie for the win in the 200 medley relay. The B squad of Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Jordan Tiffany and Remi Fabiani went 1:22.89, as did the C squad JT Ewing, Tolu Young, Kharun and Jonny Kulow. (The A squad was third in 1:23.64.)

The B squad also won the 400 free relay, via Reece Grady, Quin Seider, Adam Chaney and Kulow went 2:50.60.

Chaney accounted for the other pool record, the Florida grad transfer going 1:39.59 in the 200 backstroke.

Filip Senc-Samardzic won the 200 free in 1:33.92, four tenths ahead of Seider. Vergnes won the 100 back in 46.38, with J.T. Ewing third. Ewing returned the favor by going 1:46.82 in the 200 individual medley, two tenths up on Vergnes. ASU swept the breaststroke events, with Dobrzanski going 51.80 in the 100 ahead of Tiffany, then they switched places with Tiffany going 1:52.73 to win the 200. Mattia Mauri won the 500 free.

USC diver Moritz Wesemann swept the events on the boards. He scored 402.38 to win 3-meter, then tallied 368.63 to romp on 1-meter, with teammate Laurent Paradis second in both.

USC’s top swimming finishes came via the Chmielewskis. Krzysztof Chmielewski won the 1,000 free in 8:59.92, then the 200 fly in 1:44.80. Michal Chmielewski was second in the 100 back and 100 fly.

USC’s women’s team used the strength of its winners to come out on top. Minna Abraham won the 100 back in 51.46 and the 100 free in 47.65. Ashley McMillan claimed the 200 breast in 2:10.51 and the 200 IM in 1:57.86.
