CWC 2025: Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma stars in India’s title-winning triumph over South Africa
Batting first, India posted a commanding total of 298/7, powered by a brilliant 87 from Shafali Verma and a crucial 58 from Deepti Sharma. South Africa started their chase with promise, anchored by captain Laura Wolvaardt’s magnificent century, but India fought back fiercely with key breakthroughs.
Deepti Sharma was the star with the ball, taking a match-winning 5 wickets for 39 runs, including the pivotal wickets of Wolvaardt and other key batters during a late collapse that saw South Africa tumble from 209/5 to 246 all out. Shafali Verma also made a vital impact with the ball, striking twice early on to disrupt South Africa’s momentum.
The win was a landmark moment for Indian women’s cricket, ending decades of near misses and heartbreaks. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur donned a sensational catch to seal the victory, and the team celebrated this historic achievement in front of a jubilant home crowd.
This triumph marks India’s first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title and cements their place among the elite in women’s cricket.
