Sophie Cunningham watched on as Kelsey Mitchell led the Indiana Fever all the way to the 2025 WNBA semifinals, upsetting the Atlanta Dream in the opening round. But the Fever’s season came to an end after taking eventual champion Las Vegas Aces to overtime in Game 5. And they did it all without Cunningham and Caitlin Clark.
Still, Cunningham proved her worth during her first year in Indiana. The former Phoenix Mercury guard averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, becoming the team’s enforcer. But toward the end of the regular season, Cunningham suffered a torn right MCL and was forced to watch the entire postseason run from the sidelines.

During the offseason, Cunningham has stayed busy, starting her own podcast and even caddying alongside Clark and Lexie Hull at the pro-am that preceded THE ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican Golf Club. She is also getting ready to throw her father, Jim, a 69th birthday party in her home state of Missouri.
With his birthday coming up on Dec. 5, Cunningham is hoping for a unique gift, asking fans to help find a miniature donkey to surprise her Dad.

“Okay, so my Dad’s birthday is coming up and we have like donkeys, mules, horses, but Dad has always wanted a miniature donkey,” Cunningham said on her Instagram Story. “So I’m putting this on here because he doesn’t have social media, so keep your mouths shut if you’re back home or friends with him. And we want to get him a couple of miniature donkeys for his 69th birthday party.
“So if you are in the Missouri area, Midwest area, that knows people who are trying to sell miniature donkeys, we want spotted or brown ones. I’m not kidding, please DM me because we are looking for them because his birthday is December 5. So it’s coming up. Thanks.”

While Cunningham awaits a miniature donkey, she is also waiting for a new contract. Following the 2025 WNBA season, her one-year, $100,000 deal with the Fever expired, making her an unrestricted free agent.
