Iowa basketball comments on Trey Thompson’s injury status

by

Iowa (8-1, 1-1 Big Ten) bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Maryland (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten), 83-64, in the Hawkeyes‘ Big Ten home opener from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

In the process, first-year Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum picked up his first Big Ten win leading the Hawkeyes. Senior guard Bennett Stirtz led the way with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

There was a lot to like from the dominant bounce-back victory. But, Iowa did have one name on its pregame league-mandated game day availability report.

For the second straight game, freshman forward Trey Thompson was listed “out” on the game day availability report. Thompson still hasn’t made his Iowa debut, and coach McCollum said last month that the Hawkeyes are still weighing the possibility of a redshirt season for the 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Greeneville, Tenn.

After the win, coach McCollum was asked how long he anticipates Thompson being out.

“A little while, I think. Yeah. I think he’s got some injury stuff that I’m not supposed to talk about,” McCollum said.

While Thompson’s injury situation remains unclear, McCollum’s response does indicate that Thompson sounds further away from any sort of debut than he does to making his first appearance in the black and gold.

Iowa will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. on FS1 in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk game against rival Iowa State. The No. 9 Cyclones handed No. 1 Purdue its first loss of the season in a shocking Saturday blowout. Iowa State rolled Purdue from inside Mackey Arena, 81-58.
