The 8-player classification in Iowa high school football concludes our look at class-by-class rankings, as the 2023 state champion takes the No.1  spot in the preseason.

Bishop Garrigan captured its first 8-player title two years ago, surprising many under legendary head coach Marty Wadle. The Golden Bears reached the semifinals last year, as Remsen St. Mary’s reclaimed the crown.

Here is a look at The Sporting News Preseason 8-Player Top 10 in Iowa high school football for the 2025 season:

THE SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON 8-PLAYER TOP 10

No. 10 GTRA

Following a 7-2 season, the Titans will look for more with senior-to-be Teagan Hanson taking over the offense. Hansen threw for almost 800 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception. Jaxson Schnell is a budding superstar after recording 1,040 yards receiving and 18 TDs while Kenny Ness and Caleb Swedin have game-changing abilities.

No. 9 Don Bosco

Just like on the wrestling mats, the Dons have been a dominant football program. They have had not had a losing record since 2010, which includes eight years with at least 10 wins. Tucker Youngblut, Aiden Hellman, Zander Youngblut and Ty Christensen all gained important experience last season.

No. 8 Easton Valley

The River Hawks have Keagan Lee on the field, as he had 2,115 yards passing with 29 touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 488 yards and nine scores. Aidan Feddersen had a strong freshman season while Callan Messerich is back after catching 62 passes for 1,237 yards with 19 TDs.

No. 7 Ar-We-Va

Wyatt Ragaller racked up over 1,100 yards rushing and returns for his senior season, having scored 18 touchdowns. Fellow returning players Johnathan Riesselman, Jack Musfeldt and Devon Ehlers are also back. Ragaller also had over 450 yards receiving and seven more scores.

No. 6 Gladbrook-Reinbeck

The Rebels made a surprising deep postseason run last year, but will need to replace quarterback Drew Eilers, who threw for over 1,900 and ran for almost 1,200 with 56 total touchdowns. Hudson Clark and Treyvon Herron will be stars, as Clark had over 1,000 yards receiving and Herron had 699 rushing and 527 receiving.

No. 5 Clarksville

Things are looking up for the Indians after winning six games as Nathan Moon returns to anchor the offense. Moon had over 2,000 yards with 29 touchdowns, most of it coming with his legs. Kaiven Kielman had 456 yards and eight TDs on the ground to provide a second option.

No. 4 Iowa Valley

The Tigers averaged over 60 points per game last year, as Nolan Kriegel had an incredible sophomore campaign. Not only did he have 1,119 yards and 18 TDs in the air, he rushed for 1,991 yards and 40 touchdowns Dane Smith, Chance Hoyt and Layne Peska will be key skills players.

No. 3 Montezuma

Brady Boulton had over 1,000 yards passing and rushing last year, throwing 18 touchdowns while rushing for 17 more. He will be a senior this fall and has fellow 1,000-yard runner Broox Stockman with him. Montezuma will need to replace its leading receivers.

No. 2 Woodbine

The Tigers put up 54 points on average last year and return the heart of their offense. Brody Pryor will be a senior after throwing 29 TDs while rushing for 14 more. Leading RB Micah Moores returns along with leading receiver Landon Blum. Blum had 802 yards and scored 18 touchdowns as a sophomore.

No. 1 Bishop Garrigan

After winning it all two years ago, the Golden Bears made another return to the UNI-Dome. They now return three-year starting QB Tate Foertsch along with hard-nosed running back Ethan Marso and budding prospect Michael Joyce. Foertsch threw for over 1,000 yards and had just one interception.
