The Colorado Buffaloes celebrated Deion Sanders’ second win over an AP Top 25 opponent during his tenure. However, the fan ruined what was meant to be a joyous moment last Saturday.

After storming the field following the 24-17 upset victory over Iowa State, one fan got trapped under the goal posts and another tried to steal Iowa State wide receiver Chase Sowell’s helmet.
The Cyclones wideout, who previously played at Colorado in 2022, became the center of a viral postgame video, which shows Sowell grabbing the helmet back from the fan and shoving him away before walking off the field. The dispute was clearly started by the unidentified fan.
“I want to thank everyone who reached out and the amazing community and people behind me,” Sowell said Monday on X, formerly Twitter. “Me and my family are fine. Both athletic directors have reached out and checked on me with an apology for the incident while also getting it all figured out.”

During the game, Sowell caught two passes for 25 yards. Thankfully, nobody was harmed in the incidents.
Sowell’s father addressed the situation on social media, noting that while the video made the incident appear alarming, the family’s overall experience in Boulder was positive. He said 99% of the Colorado fans, players and staff treated them with kindness and respect.
For Colorado, this is the second questionable fan misconduct incident this season. The Big 12 fined CU $50,000 for spectators chanting slurs against BYU. There will likely be a similar fine in this scenario as well.
“We had 50,000 right there. We can chip in,” Sanders said about the possible fine after the game. “It’s how it was when I grew up. Before you get in the car, some gas, you’ve got to chip in. Just chip in.”
