Iowa women’s basketball continues climb in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

by

Iowa’s (8-0) pair of wins from Carver-Hawkeye Arena over Western Illinois and Fairfield once again caught the pollsters’ attention, which has boosted the Hawkeyes even higher in the latest edition of the USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll.

While the successful week of play did not boost the Hawkeyes nearly as much as last week’s jump, Iowa still was rewarded with a two-spot jump to No. 12 nationally.

As the Hawkeyes dealt with injuries to Chit-Chat Wright, Teagan Mallegni, and Emely Rodriguez over the past week, freshman guard Addie Deal took full advantage of increased minutes. Deal registered a career-best performance in Wednesday’s win over Western Illinois with a team-high 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting and 3-for-4 from 3-point range.

In addition to Deal, sophomore center Ava Heiden continued her phenomenal play by recording double-doubles in the Hawkeyes’ two wins, including a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with 18 points on Sunday against Fairfield. Heiden now has five double-doubles through eight games this season.

Other Big Ten teams in the latest coaches poll include No. 4 UCLA, No. 6 Maryland, No. 8 Michigan, No. 18 USC, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 22 Washington, and No. 24 Ohio State. Nebraska, Oregon, and Indiana are all receiving votes.

The top four saw some shifting this week as both UCLA and South Carolina slipped one spot, respectively, while Texas jumped two spots from No. 4 to No. 2. Defending national champion UConn still headlines the poll as the No. 1 program.
