Iowa women’s basketball standout Ava Heiden registers first career double-double

by

Following a career-best performance in Iowa women’s basketball’s (1-0, 0-0) blowout 86-51 win over Southern (0-1, 0-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference), sophomore center Ava Heiden caught up with Big Ten Network Plus’ sideline reporter, AJ Reisetter, after the game to discuss her stellar showing.

On the night, Heiden notched career-highs in both points and rebounds and tallied her first career double-double. Heiden finished with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field 14 rebounds during her 25 minutes of action. The 6-foot-4 Oregon native also registered one block and one steal to complete her stat line.

Reisetter opened by asking Heiden what led to her incredible season-opening performance.

“I think our team was sharing the ball really well,” Heiden said. “We played with a great chemistry, and we’re just figuring that out at the beginning of the season, but I think that it’s playing through my teammates. They were helping me find those great shots tonight.

Reisetter then asked Heiden what Iowa fans need to know about this new-look Hawkeyes squad.

“Just be ready. Just be ready,” Heiden said with a wide smile. “That’s all I got to say.”

The interview ended with Heiden being asked what she has learned from head coach Jan Jensen so far during her time with the Hawkeyes.

“She’s a great teacher. She’ll always harp on the little things, but that is such a lost art, I think. It’s just doing the routine things over and over again until you master it, or get as close to mastering it as you can,” Heiden said.

Iowa returns to play on Sunday, Nov. 9 when it welcomes Evansville to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Sunday’s game against the Purple Aces will tip off at 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed exclusively on Big Ten Plus.
