One game into the new women’s college basketball season, the Iowa Hawkeyes are already making splashes on the national stage with players stepping up and flashing.
Last night, the Hawkeyes handled Southern 86-51 in a comfortable win, which saw three Hawkeyes score double-digits and nine different players register a bucket. The evening was highlighted by Ava Heidein registering her first career double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Her performance stood out among the nation’s best, as ESPN highlighted Heiden’s performance as one of the most impressive across all of women’s basketball.
Creme: Ava Heiden, Iowa Hawkeyes
Most of Heiden’s freshman season was spent in the background. Her playing time (9.7 MPG) and production (5.0 PPG) ranged from inconsistent to nonexistent. Then she notched three straight double-figure scoring performances across the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments, realizing some of the potential that made her a top-40 recruit. On Monday against Southern, the momentum hit another gear. Her 21 points and 14 rebounds led the Hawkeyes and were career highs. Iowa struggled early, but Heiden’s nine points in a 22-10 second quarter gave the Hawkeyes the cushion they needed en route to a comfortable 86-51 win. – Charlie Creme, ESPN
The Hawkeyes now get a few days of rest before they get back in action on Sunday, November 9th. Iowa will welcome Evansville to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a 2 p.m. CT tip that will air on B1G+.
