Last year's US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper has been forced to bring his campaign to an early end. The Briton arrived in New York following a difficult period on the sidelines due to arm discomfort.
He suffered an early loss at Wimbledon and missed Toronto and Cincinnati to recover for the final Major event of the season. World no. 5 made a return in New York and defeated Federico Agustin Gomez 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
The Briton and the Argentine fought for three hours, and Draper passed a stern test. However, the 23-year-old decided to avoid more serious issues and withdrew ahead of the second-round clash with Zizou Bergs.

The problem with his troubled arm resurfaced and prevented last year's semi-finalist to continue the tournament and chase another deep run. Jack will drop at least two spots on the ATP ranking list, with Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic moving in front.
For Draper the focus now shifts to recovery and ensuring his long-term fitness following a couple of setbacks in the previous years. His talent and explosive game make him one of the brightest prospects on the ATP Tour.
However, he will have to improve physically to challenge the rivals from the top, although we have already seen him in the top-4. For now, his immediate priority is protecting his health and treating an ongoing injury.

Supporters will hope this withdrawal proves to be a precautionary step rather than a sign of a prolonged absence. Jack looks eager to return stronger in the upcoming weeks, although it's hard to expect him in the Davis Cup against Poland.
At the moment, Draper is the top seed at the ATP 250 event in Chengdu, the first event of the Asian swing.
"Hi guys, I'm sorry to say I will be withdrawing from the US Open. I tried my best to be here and give myself every chance to play. However, the discomfort in my arm has become too much, and I have to do what is right and look after myself.
Thank you for all the support," Jack Draper wrote.
