The Rock’s stint with DC ended after 2022’s Black Adam movie and now James Gunn has explained why things between the Rock and the DCU never worked out.
While speaking on Happy, Sad, Confused, James Gunn explained that the situation between The Rock and the DC Universe didn’t work out because things were already set in motion behind the scenes.
When it was announced that Henry Cavill was returning as Superman, Gunn found it confusing since they already had a different plan in place. He felt it was unfair to Cavill and called the whole thing a major letdown.
At the time, DC was going through a leadership vacuum and Gunn referenced how The Rock was pushing his own creative visions and forcing his way into DC. However, those ideas didn’t align with what Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had in mind, and that direction was never actually part of the long-term plan.
“They were announcing that Henry was back, and I was just confused, because we already knew what the plan was. The plan was for him to return as Superman. It felt really unfair to him, and honestly, it was a total bummer. At that time, there was a bit of a vacuum, and um, trying to be as diplomatic as possible, but there were other people that had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and were trying to force their way, and it just was never a part of the equation for David Zaslav, who was the head of WBD.”
This comes after it was previously reported that a sequel to Black Adam was canceled a few years ago. In fact, Black Adam’s failure was blamed for ending The Rock’s DC takeover as well, since talks ended after the movie failed at the Box Office. Regardless, fans feel the current DCU is already off to a great start thanks to Superman, but we’ll have to see if The Rock does make his way back somehow.
