Jannik Sinner topples Ben Shelton, reaches Paris Masters SF

Jannik Sinner is through to his first semi-final at the Paris Masters. World no. 2 faced Ben Shelton and scored a dominant 6-3, 6-3 victory in 69 minutes to remain on the title course.

The four-time Major winner outplayed fellow top-10 rival, dropping eight points in his games and suffering one break from as many chances offered to his rival. The American could not follow that pace. 

A left-hander lost 45% of the points in his games and experienced four breaks from eight chances offered to the favorite. Jannik provided his 24th straight indoor victory. 

The Italian had the upper hand from the baseline and at the net, having the advantage in the shortest, mid-range and most extended rallies. World no. 2 landed 16 winners and ten unforced errors. 

He welcomed 20 mistakes from his rival and wasted no time in another victory, his 51st of the season. Ben denied two break points in the third game of the match before facing more issues at 2-2.

Sinner made a push and landed a smash winner for a break and the advantage. He closed the next game at love with a backhand down the line winner and landed an ace two games later for 5-3.

Jannik provided another break in game nine, landing a backhand winner and wrapping up the first part of the duel in 34 minutes. World no. 2 held at love in the third game of the second set and stepped in on the return in the next one.

He welcomed Shelton's loose forehand, providing a break and moving 3-1 in front. Ben pulled the break back in game five with a forehand down the line winner, returning to the positive side and making the scoreboard more interesting.

The Italian recovered and landed a forehand winner in game seven for 4-3. He attacked on the return in the next one and created two break points. He converted the second after Ben's costly double fault and moved 5-3 in front.

Sinner served for the win in game nine and landed a crafty volley winner at the net on a match point to seal the deal and reach the last four.
