Jannik Sinner's coach reflects on US Open loss: 'Carlos Alcaraz set the benchmark'

by

Jannik Sinner's coach, Simone Vagnozzi, offered an honest assessment of his player's performance in Cincinnati and the US Open, focusing on the New York setback.

Alcaraz ousted Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes for his sixth Major title at 22. Vagnozzi acknowledged that the Spaniard proved superior both physically and tennis wise in their most recent clash.

Carlos showed more variety than world no. 1 and outplayed him in every segment to claim his second US Open trophy and terminate the rival's streak of 27 hard-court Major victories.

The Italian struggled to impose his serve. He also displayed predictable patterns that could not do much against such a strong and determined opponent. Jannik served at 48% and got broken five times from 11 chances offered to his rival.

Carlos tamed his strokes superbly and fired over 40 winners. He lost the second set from the only opportunity presented to his rival but had the upper hand in the remaining ones to emerge at the top.

For Vagnozzi, however, there is no room for alarm bells. Sinner has endured an intense stretch following his three-month suspension. He has balanced, recovery, competition and constant adjustments.

Despite the US Open final defeat, the Italian's season remains exceptional following two Major titles in Melbourne and London and numerous finals. Jannik missed four Masters 1000 events.

However, he remains in the year-end no. 1 contention ahead of his first match at the Shanghai Masters. The San Candido native has work on various improvements in the previous weeks, especially in the serving area.

His team and he introduced small technical adjustments to improve consistency and precision of his initial shot. The early signs have been positive, despite expected ups and downs at the ATP 500 event in Beijing.

Jannik's team continues to emphasize long-term development rather than short-term reactions. Each experience will contribute to that evolution, and Vagnozzi prioritizes further progress.

"Jannik's US Open final defeat did not surprise me. Carlos was physically and tennis-wise better at that moment. We must not forget that Jannik has had a very difficult five months.

We should not talk about any crisis after two Major titles this season and that many finals. We are seeking improvements. Things work at times, and other times they do not. Jannik did not serve well in Cincinnati and New York.

We made a small change to his serve motion before arriving in China. He has adapted well and has been serving well," Simone Vagnozzi said.
