Jeff Hardy is very passionate about his music career, but it appears he considered quitting music for good after getting a ton of hate for his work.
While speaking on the Outside the Ring podcast, Jeff Hardy talked about how social media started to affect him, especially with his music. At first, he never looked at the comments people left, but eventually he started reading them. A lot of the comments were kind and supportive, but some were really mean and hurtful.
“And naturally, with the way social media is these days—especially with me and my music—you can… I got to a point where I’d look through the comments. I used to never look at comments. The majority, you know, there’s a lot of nice ones and kind ones… but then naturally, as you know, you can see some pretty hateful ones.”
Hardy said that the negative words started to get to him and mess with his mind and heart. For a while, he felt like Instagram was controlling how he saw himself and what he should be. It got so bad that it even made him consider quitting music, thinking he wasn’t good enough.
The Charismatic Enigma said he stayed in that dark place for a little while, but now he tries to focus on the positive and laugh about things. One of the mean comments that actually made him laugh said, “Please stop singing now. You make Jericho look like a good singer.” He even jokes about that now and it makes people laugh. But at the time, those kinds of comments really affected him in a big way.
“Oh man, just the way words can affect you—your heart and your brain. For a while there, my singing… I got to this point where I was kind of living in a world of like, Instagram judging my world and how I should be. And I just let it affect me—like, ‘Oh my god, I should stop singing. I might need to stop because I suck at singing.’ It was crazy.
But I got in a little groove of that for a while. And now, I try to remember the good things and find the humor in everything. One of my favorite negative comments I saw—it actually made me laugh—was: ‘Please stop singing now. You make Jericho look like a good singer.’ So I tell that joke sometimes, and people laugh. But yeah, some of those comments, man… I was letting them affect me pretty bad.”
Fans of Jeff Hardy during his original TNA days certainly remember his ‘Modest’ theme song that he made alongside his band Peroxwhy?gen and Hardy has released other albums afterwards as well, so it’s clear many appreciated his music. Nonetheless, fans are just glad Hardy didn’t quit making music and that’s what matters in the end.
