After finally agreeing to a new contract with Jonathan Kuminga, the Golden State Warriors are likely biding their time until they can trade him. It seems clear that he doesn’t fit into the long-term plans, and the goal for bringing him back was apparently to keep from losing him for nothing.
However, according to Warriors star Jimmy Butler, he believes that he can help Kuminga reach his full potential.
“I just want to help JK be great. He’s got so much raw talent — he’s aggressive, athletic, and super smart. I know how great he wants to be and how great he can be, so now it’s my job to help him fulfill that,” Butler said.
Butler seemingly taking Kuminga under his wing is admittedly intriguing considering Butler made the most of his potential through hard work. He was taken 30th in the 2011 NBA draft and quickly worked his way into becoming a star, making his first All-Star team just four years after he was drafted.
Kuminga was taken much higher in the 2021 NBA draft, going 7th overall, though his growth has seemingly stalled in Golden State, with Coach Steve Kerr apparently not a fan of his game.
That could result in Golden State trading him ahead of the deadline. However, Butler could hopefully work his magic with Kuminga.
Can Jimmy Butler unlock Jonathan Kuminga’s full potential?
On paper, Butler would seem to be a perfect mentor for Kuminga. After all, they are both similar-sized wings, and both aren’t reliant on three-point shooting to have an offensive impact.
If Kuminga can model his game after Butler, then he would be much more valuable. Not only to the Warriors but also a potential trade partner. Being more consistent defensively, focusing on being more efficient, and playmaking could be a good starting point for Kuminga.
Butler will hopefully be able to provide valuable insight to guide him along. How ironic would it be if the Warriors traded for Butler and he not only helped them extend their window but also helped Kuminga evolve into the player the Warriors and their fans hope that he could be? If that were to happen, trading for Butler would be a home run move.
Overall, Butler taking an interest in Kuminga could be just what he needs. If Butler can maximize Kuminga’s full potential, then that could be a game changer for the Warriors.
