John Fitzgerald admits he was wrong about Carlos Alcaraz

by

Carlos Alcaraz's 2025 season has undoubtedly been the best of his entire career so far, as he himself admitted after lifting the trophy in Tokyo a few days ago. After being eliminated on his debut at the Miami Open in early spring, the Spanish champion found insane confidence and learned to play his best tennis with the consistency that he had often lacked in the past.

The 22-year-old from Murcia has already broken his personal record for singles wins and suffered only seven losses in 2025, as well as having won eight titles that allowed him to become the leader of the ATP Race by a wide margin over all his opponents.

The six-time Grand Slam champion has overtaken his main rival Jannik Sinner at the top of the ATP rankings thanks to his second success at the US Open last month and is ready to make a difference in the last month and a half of the season as well.

As everyone knows, Carlitos made the decision to skip the Shanghai Rolex Masters this year wanting to recharge his batteries ahead of the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, a tournament where he had not played well in 2024 also due to a flu virus.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Australian Open podcast, former world No.1 in doubles John Fitzgerald admitted that he didn't expect such regularity from Carlos: “The flair that Alcaraz has is extraordinary. I thought it would hold him back a little bit in big matches because he would make too many mistakes. But now, just as you said, he has cut out a lot of those errors. He has still been able to use his flair and the variety that he has got, but he is not making mistakes. It is working all the time.”

He also added: “All that gives me joy as a tennis admirer and someone who cares about the sport, but what I really like at the end of the day is how much both he and Sinner both respect the sport. I love that. Therefore they are going to be good for the sport for a long period of time.”
