John McEnroe sparks outrage with US Open staff comment

by

John McEnroe has provoked the public and well-known faces of the tennis scene. Namely, the 66-year-old made a bizarre comment after Novak Djokovic's victory over Taylor Fritz, which did not receive positive reactions. A senior member of staff was seen bringing re-strung rackets to the players.

ESPN commentator McEnroe then said "thanks grandma" and added "good time for her age group".

Not long after, the identity of the staff member in question was revealed. In question is Susan Perkins, who was not particularly happy about McEnroe's comments.

In the conversation with Sportskeeda, she was direct, stressing that his comments were not humorous at all, but that they even had a different intention.

John is known for his controversial comments and knows how to exaggerate in many moments, including this time. Perkins is clearly frustrated and sees this as a slight.

‘I would like to tell John McEnroe that his comments such as “good time for her age group” and “grandma” felt dismissive and hurtful rather than humorous,’ Perkins told Sportskeeda.

‘I was simply doing my job delivering a restrung racket to a player. His job is to comment on the players, not other people working on the court.

It is one thing to jest, it’s another to stereotype someone based on age.'

Her life

She went on to add that she is a big fan of tennis and uses every opportunity to do her job. Susan Perkins also noted that she took two weeks of vacation in August to work here, enjoying every moment.

Not long after John's comments, Perkins said she felt fear as she looked toward the ESPN booth, and later stressed that she works year-round as a therapist.

The well-known face of the tennis scene, McEnroe, has not yet spoken about this incident, but it is clear that the majority will be critical of him.
