Jon Jones on ‘brilliant’ fighter he wanted to model UFC career after

by

Jon Jones took inspiration from one of the all-time greats in the UFC.

Jones, a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, is widely considered the greatest fighter of all time. The main debate mostly comes down to Jones and Georges St-Pierre, who is also a former two-division UFC champion.

Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) opened up on how he wanted to follow in the footsteps of St-Pierre, and how he ended up training with the same team.

“I really enjoy the way GSP conducted himself – the professionalism, the size of his team, how every member of his group was vital,” Jones said on “No Scripts Podcast.” “The way that he would wear suits to the UFC, he was one of the first fighters to do that.

“I wanted to model my career after him, and that’s why I met Greg Jackson. Greg Jackson was one of Georges St-Pierre’s coaches at the time, and sure enough, this guy completely changed my life, my psychology. Modeling myself after GSP was brilliant, the same way Gable (Steveson) models himself after me. I respect it tremendously.”

Unlike St-Pierre, Jones is not done with his fighting career just yet. After retiring and relinquishing his UFC heavyweight title in June, it took Jones only two weeks to change his mind and re-enter the drug testing pool. Jones still hopes to compete on the UFC’s White House event next June, but Dana White remains hesitant to put him on the card.
