Jonathan Kuminga and his drawn-out contract negotiations with Golden State might be nearing the finish line, but only if one key change is made.
The Warriors have been in discussions with their 22-year-old forward for months, and while theyβve offered multiple deals, his camp is making it clear that the path to agreement is simple.
βI actually talked to Aaron Turner, Jonathan Kumingaβs agent, this morning, and the messaging theyβre adopting this week is βTurn the [team option] to a [player option] and itβs done,ββ ESPNβs Anthony Slater said on NBA Today. βAnd that messaging is generally saying, if itβs a team option on [that deal], if thatβs suddenly a player option, not only will Jonathan Kuminga sign it, theyβre saying, but he will be completely bought in on the mission theyβre asking of him. Which is, using Turnerβs messaging, that is to get Steph Curry and Draymond Green a fifth ring, [and] Jimmy Butler his first ring.β
Slater and Shams Charania previously reported the Warriorsβ latest offer is for three years and $75.2 million. Kuminga and Turner have made it clear that if the option is switched, theyβre ready to sign, according to NBC Sports Bay Areaβs Dalton Johnson.
The messaging from Jonathan Kuminga and his agent Aaron Turner, as @anthonyVslater reported, is theyβre all-in if the team option becomes a player option on the new three-year offer thatβs worth around $75 million. Done deal
The Warriors have been unwilling to do a player option

Golden State has so far held firm, preferring to keep the option on the teamβs side.
βThatβs an understanding of him that itβs a show of goodwill if they set it to a player option, for what theyβre calling βyears of confusionβ over his role and a willingness to suppress some of his personal ambitions, which are obviously very much a part of the holdup here, accept what probably is going to be a bench role, whatβs probably going to be fluctuating minutes and accepting what will very likely be a tradable contract,β Slater added.
