Jonathan Kuminga’s Future in Limbo as Offers Roll In

Jonathan Kuminga remains unsigned nearly a month into free agency, and tension between him and Golden State continues to mount.

The Warriors have received two concrete sign-and-trade offers for Kuminga, one each from the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

“I’m told the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings are two teams that have made concrete offers with the Warriors over the last week or so,” Charania reported. “They’re two of the more aggressive teams with Kuminga. And they’re also offering him an opportunity for significant minutes, a starting-caliber role in their lineup. And those are two things that he wants more than anything.”

While multiple teams circle with sign-and-trade offers, one NBA veteran is stepping up to defend Kuminga and question the Warriors’ handling of their former No. 7 pick.

“My question to the Warriors, the organization, and Steve Kerr is, why hasn’t Steve Kerr embraced this young man?” Kendrick Perkins said on ESPN. “Why hasn’t he wrapped his arms around him as a guy that y’all drafted with the No. 7 pick?

“When Steph Curry went out last postseason, the backend of the games against the Timberwolves in the playoffs, [Kuminga] did his thing. So you’re developing this young stud who, to me, has an All-NBA-type ceiling. What is the problem?”

The 22-year-old forward averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists last season, but elevated his game in the playoffs, putting up 20.8 points per game during the second-round series against Minnesota.

Despite his breakout stretch, he’s yet to be secured long-term by Golden State.
