Key takeaways from Alabama’s road win vs. Missouri

by

Alabama came away with a close win vs. Missouri on Saturday, 27-24.

The Alabama defense did a great job of stopping the Missouri running game. Missouri had a game plan to make Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard ineffective. They succeeded at this, but the Tide were able to turn to other playmakers to include Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley, Lotzeir Brooks, and Isaiah Horton.

Alabama has a high ceiling this year, but they have to remain healthy. Ty Simpson has continued to play at a Heisman level. The coaches have improved the offensive line and run defense. Much is expected as we approach the second half of the season.

Below are a few takeaways from Alabama’s win over Missouri.

The Alabama defense did a great job of shutting down the Missouri offense

Missouri was leading the SEC in offense. They had been averaging 548 yards of total offense with 256 yards passing, 292 yards rushing, and 45 points per game. Saturday, Missouri had 330 yards of total offense with 167 yards passing, 163 yards rushing, and 24 points. Alabama had two sacks, two TFL, two pass defense, and two interceptions on the day. They also won the turnover battle 2-1. The defense slowed down the Missouri running game, which was really the strength of their offense. They were also effective putting pressure on Beau Pribula when passing.

All season long Alabama has been questioned about whether they can stop the run. Saturday, they answered the bell, with their best performance against the best running game in the SEC. Alabama looked much better in the run fits. Kudos to Kane Wommack and the defensive staff.

Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard combined for a total of 3 receptions for 20 yards (and Alabama still won)

The Missouri game plan had to have been to take Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams out of the game. They forced Alabama to run the football and they took away the deep ball. Offensive players Jam Miller, Daniel Hill, Lotzeir Brooks, and Isaiah Horton all made contributions to compensate for this. This is a testament to Alabama’s depth on offense. They have many playmakers, and many ways to beat you. Between Ty Simpson, Ryan Grubb, and the rest of the offense, they found a way to eek out a road win.

Daniel Hill can be another option between the tackles

The news about Jam Miller’s concussion is certainly not good. Time will tell whether he will miss any time next week vs. Tennessee. That being said, Daniel Hill stepped up, and showed he can be another option between the tackles for Alabama. Hill is 6’1 244 lbs, and has not had many playing reps. As he gets more reps, he will get quicker, faster, more explosive, and more decisive as a runner. He can be another reliable between the tackles back for Alabama, so that too-much workload is not put on Miller.

Hill can also open the playbook up for Kevin Riley, who is dynamic and can be a receiver out of the backfield. Given all the injuries, Ty Simpson and Ryan Grubb have been the two pillars of the Alabama offense. Simpson has been consistent and the best player in the country. Ryan Grubb has done a wonderful job of using the interchangeable parts each week to generate offense and win football games.

Ryan Grubb and Kane Wommack have proven that they can adjust, and put their players in a position to be successful. Alabama finally did a good job of stopping the run against Missouri, who is a very good running team. Alabama has great depth, having talented playmaker in all position groups. They have the best player at the most important position in Ty Simpson.

They also have coaches who can create matchup problems for other coaches in the SEC, due to their background in the Pac 12. If they can stay healthy at the key positions, the coaches can make enough adjustments to win a national championship. If they keep having bad luck with injuries, this will hamper this outcome.
