Lady Vols defeat Belmont, ties all-time basketball series

No. 12 Tennessee (3-1) defeated Belmont (2-2), 68-58, Thursday at Food City Center.

The Lady Vols led, 32-26, at halftime after outscoring the Bruins, 25-11, in the first quarter. Tennessee trailed, 49-46, at the end of the third quarter.

Talayasia Cooper recorded a double-double for Tennessee and was one of three Lady Vols to score 10-plus points. She totaled 22 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Cooper converted 9-of-22 field goal attempts, 1-of-8 three-point attempts and 3-of-6 free throw attempts.

Janaiah Barker recorded 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Zee Spearman had 10 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals for Tennessee. Mia Pauldo finished with nine points, three steals and two assists.

The Lady Vols tied the all-time series against Belmont, 6-6. Tennessee outrebounded the Bruins, 48-36, and forced 20 Belmont turnovers.

Former Lady Vol and Farragut High School (Farragut, Tennessee ) player Avery Strickland led the Bruins with 14 points. She also recorded two rebounds.

Tennessee will next play Thursday at Middle Tennessee State. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST at Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
