Liberty’s Jonquel Jones undergoes offseason right ankle surgery

On Monday, Jonquel Jones shared on her Instagram account that she underwent surgery.

The procedure was on her right ankle, a source confirmed to the Daily News.

“Officially Day 1 of recovery,” the 6-6 star wrote on her Instagram story post.

Jones injured her right ankle multiple times during the 2025 WNBA season. She hurt the ankle in a 86-78 win against the Washington Mystics on June 5 and re-aggravated the injury during a 89-81 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on June 19.

Jones was limited to 31 out of 44 regular-season games while dealing with her hurt ankle.

After re-aggravating the ankle, Jones returned on July 22, which was about two months before the start of the postseason.

Jones and the Liberty eventually were sent home by the Mercury in a best-of-three first-round playoff series. Jones, who became the Liberty’s most reliable piece in postseason play since arriving in Brooklyn, averaged just 5.7 points and 11 rebounds in those three playoff games.

The 2024 WNBA Finals MVP averaged 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game during the 2025 regular season.

Jones’ surgery comes as the center enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said last month he has the “utmost confidence” Jones will re-sign with the team.

Free agency would begin after the New Year, but exact dates are uncertain as the league and players association remain at odds over a new collective bargaining agreement. A lockout is all but certain with the current Oct. 31 deadline approaching.
